Insurance

Peace of mind

If you have fully comprehensive motor insurance you can usually claim for windscreen repair and windscreen replacement on your policy. In most cases it will not affect your no-claims bonus.

If you just need your windscreen repaired then usually this is free of charge to you. However, if you require a replacement windscreen you will normally have to pay the insurance excess (usually to the windscreen service company).

This will usually cost you £50 - 60 depending on your excess. You pay it direct to the windscreen company in most cases.

Check your policy

If you need windscreen repair or replacement check your policy documents first.

Some insurers require you to use a particular vehicle glass repair and replacement company such as the market leader Autoglass or RAC Auto Windscreens.

What if you don't have cover?

If you don't have windscreen cover on your insurance then you will need to call the windscreen companies. They don't publish prices on their web sites and usually you have to contact them to enquire.

Remember

1. Minimise the amount you have to pay by getting stone chip damage repaired as soon as possible. This is even more important if you don't have windscreen cover on your insurance policy. Most windscreen companies offer a 24/7 service and they will come to you.

2. Check your motor insurance policy before you call the windscreen repair or replacement firm to see whether you are covered.
