MOT

Pass the test

Windscreens have been part of the annual MOT test since the early 1980s. And, a damaged windscreen - one with a crack or chip, for example, can cause your vehicle to fail the MOT.

However, a lot depends on where the chip is in relation to the driver's field of vision and the size and extent of the windscreen damage. Even a chip on the windscreen as small as a 5 pence piece could be enough to cause your car to fail the MOT test.

Passing the MOT

A damaged screen can be repaired and in most cases your screen will not cause the car to fail its MOT. However, you should be aware that whether your car passes or fails its MOT is entirely at the discretion of the MOT tester. The Autoglass web site has a helpful page on windscreens and the MOT.

Pre-MOT Inspection

Some of the vehicle glass repair and replacement companies will give your vehicle's windscreen a pre-MOT inspection.

Wipers matter too

And, don't forget your windscreen washers and wipers - they can play a part in deciding whether you get an MOT fail or pass.

The Government wants you to be able to see where you are going and anything - not just a chip a windscreen - which prevents this may cause your vehicle to fail its MOT.
